WHO SHOULD TRY THIS EXPERIENCE?
Beginners, who want to try scuba diving, but aren’t quite ready to take the plunge into a certification course. While not a scuba certification course, Discover Scuba Diving is a quick and easy introduction to what it takes to explore the underwater world.

TO SIGN UP FOR A PADI DISCOVER SCUBA DIVING EXPERIENCE
– You must be at least 10 years old.
– No prior experience with scuba diving is necessary, but you need to be in reasonable physical health.
– Bring a swimsuit and towel, we provide everything you need for your first underwater experience

Open Water Diving

WHO SHOULD TRY THIS EXPERIENCE?
Beginners who want to take scuba diving lessons and become scuba diving certified.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
The PADI Open Water Diver course teaches you the basics of diving and how to stay safe through knowledge development and practical training. The Open Water Diver course consists of 3 main components:
• Knowledge development is accomplished online, in a classroom or through independent study to understand the basic principles and theory of scuba diving.
• Confined Water Dives to learn basic scuba skill sin a pool or shallow confined water.
• Open Water Dives to use your skills and explore the underwater environment.
Open water training dives are completed at the following locations: Dutch Springs in Bethlehem, PA

ADDITIONAL COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Water skills: Swim 200 yards & 10 minute tread water/float.

MINIMUM AGE:
10 years old. Parents/guardians of divers under age 18, please email deborah.miller@rutgers.edu after registration to advise of student age.

Advanced

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver

WHO SHOULD TRY THIS EXPERIENCE?
Certified scuba divers who have experienced the thrill of exploring parts of the underwater world, but know there’s more to discover. Whether you’re looking for new dive adventures, to improve your scuba skills, or both, taking another PADI dive course will help you gain more confidence and meet more dive buddies.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
• Plan your learning with your instructor by choosing from a long list of Adventure Dives. There are two required dives – Deep and Underwater Navigation – and you choose the other three, for a total of five dives.
• During the Deep Adventure Dive, you learn how to plan dives to deal with the physiological effects and challenges of deeper scuba diving.
• The Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive refines your compass navigation skills and helps you better navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time.
• The other knowledge and skills you get vary with your interest* and the adventures you have – photography,
buoyancy control, fish identification, exploring wrecks and many more.

PRE-REQUISITES:
PADI Open Water Diver certification or an equivalent certification from another training
organization.

MINIMUM AGE:
12 years

Rescue Diver

WHO SHOULD TRY THIS EXPERIENCE?
Experienced scuba divers who want to learn how to manage problems in the water, and become more confident in your skills as a diver, knowing that you can help others if needed.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
The PADI Rescue Diver course prepares you to deal with dive emergencies, both minor and major, using a variety of techniques. Through knowledge development and rescue exercises, you learn what to look for and how to respond. For many, earning a PADI Rescue Diver certification is the start of a career in diving.
• Self rescue
• Recognizing and managing stress in other divers
• Emergency management and equipment
• Rescuing panicked divers
• Rescuing unresponsive divers

PRE-REQUISITES:
PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent from another training organization. PADI Emergency First Response Primary/Secondary Care or qualifying CPR /First Aid training from another training organization within the last 24 months.

MINIMUM AGE:
12 years old.

CERTIFICATION AWARDED:
PADI Rescue Diver, which then qualifies you for further training to become a PADI Divemaster

Requirements for Advance Diver: Emergency First Response

EMERGENCY FIRST RESPONSE TRAINING FOCUSES ON BUILDING CONFIDENCE IN LAY RESCUERS AND INCREASING THEIR WILLINGNESS TO RESPOND WHEN FACED WITH A MEDICAL EMERGENCY. COURSE PARTICIPANTS LEARN SIMPLE TO FOLLOW STEPS FOR EMERGENCY CARE AND PRACTICE APPLYING SKILLS IN A NON-STRESSFUL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. ALL COURSES ARE SUPPORTED BY SELF-STUDY
MANUALS, VIDEOS AND QUICK REFERENCE CARDS.

EFR courses meet the CPR and first aid training requirements for the PADI Rescue Diver course and all professional-level ratings. EFR courses also meet the CPR/First Aid requirements for many graduate school, internship, research project and job applications.

Rutgers Scuba offers the following EFR courses and is based on internationally recognized medical guidelines for emergency care.
• Primary Care (CPR)
• Secondary Care (First Aid)
• CPR & AED

Emergency First Response Instructor

CPR AND FIRST AID ARE KEY SKILLS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO EVERYONE, NOT JUST SCUBA DIVERS. AS AN EMERGENCY FIRST RESPONSE INSTRUCTOR, YOU TEACH SKILLS BASED ON INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED EMERGENCY CARE GUIDELINES, AND YOU CAN OFFER COURSES TO ANYONE. THE GREAT THING ABOUT EFR COURSES IS THEY MAKE LEARNING EASY BY PROVIDING A COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT TO PRACTICE EMERGENCY CARE SKILLS. YOUR STUDENTS FINISH THE COURSE FEELING CONFIDENT WITH THEIR NEW SKILLS AND READY TO HELP SOMEONE IN NEED.

Your role as an EFR Instructor is to be a coach that creates a positive learning environment. Along with learning how to structure and organize EFR courses, you practice:
• Presenting course content.
• Encouraging self-discovery in students.
• Evaluating student understanding and skill mastery during hands-on skills practice.
• Managing effective scenario-based learning experiences.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
The only requirements are that you’re at least 18 years old and have Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care (CPR and First Aid) training within the past 24 months. An EFR Instructor rating is required to become a PADI Instructor, but you don’t have to wait until you’re ready to go pro. You can complete ERFI prior to beginning your PADI Instructor training.
