Congratulations to Amy Kuzminov for being awarded one of this year’s distinguished Schlanger Graduate Student Fellowship by the Consortium of Ocean Leadership’s U.S. Science Support Program. Amy will be measuring uranium isotope ratios in sediments from the Cretaceous Ocean Anoxic Event 2 (~94 Mya) to test the relative contribution of ocean stratification and productivity in driving this global anoxic event. This study is complimentary to her graduate research calibrating uranium isotopes in modern sedimentary settings.
The Schlanger Fellowship is a merit-based award for outstanding graduate students to conduct research related to the International Ocean Drilling Program. Fellowship awards are $30,000 for a 12-month period. She is one of four graduate students across the US who were awarded the fellowship this year. Amy has been working with our RIOS undergraduate intern Dominique Iaccarino from Amherst College this summer to get the project off the ground. Dominique has been helping Amy to get some basic data on trace metal concentrations.
