Recently the graduate students held a joint meeting with the undergraduate students in the Rutgers Oceanography Club to discuss the graduate student application process. Unfortunately we were unable to hold our meeting in person due to pandemic restrictions, and instead, organized a virtual meeting via Zoom. This has been an ongoing collaboration for the past 3 years, and allows the graduate students to share their experiences and answer any questions in a casual setting. Along with chatting about the application process, we also answered questions about: getting involved in research, taking classes as a graduate student, the qualifying process, cost and benefits of a masters vs PhD, career paths in academia, achieving a proper work/life balance, and our hobbies outside the program.
