email from Charlie Flagg: "Hi,
As you may know by now the recovery of the glider from the Parker
didn't quite go as planned. We started looking around 11:30 at one of
the positions we'd gotten around 10. No glider. We made all sorts of
estimates as to where the glider could have gone and searched. No
glider. We then came in toward shore to get cell connection at which
point Dave's call got cut off but ended with "something strange".
Briefly got Lucas on the phone who gave us a position that clearly was
on shore and in Patchogue. ??? So we gave up on the glider and
continued searching for a turtle tag. No luck there even though the
water was nearly mill pond calm.
Once ashore I got a phone message with a number, called but no answer.
However the SFMC showed the position of the glider and that it was at
the Island View Marina in Patchogue. So drove there and found the
glider behind some boats - no one around. The glider's tail cone was
cracked and lying aside while the glider was still powered up and the
air bladder was full. So I loaded it up and managed to get control
using my phone, deflated the air bladder, retracked the ballast and
exited.
I talked to the guy who recovered the glider who said that the tail
cone was cracked and partially off when they found it. There is a
message on the glider requesting recovering after some date. But I
hadn't included a date, so they picked it up. The O2 sensor was
hanging by its cable and the DMON connector was turned a bit.
Otherwise, without a complete post-mortem, the glider seems OK.
Tomorrow we'll find out if there is any water inside which might have
caused the abort. Beginning to doubt that."
