Stalled for abort analysis from SBU_01, happened on Donglai's 350 m glider as well
Looking at code beh abort stalled for doesn't really seem like it does anything useful. Kind of says if m_speed hasn't changed for x sec, abort. m_speed can be halted by a surfacing. I would increase your stalled for abort timers to maybe 40 minutes? Assuming they were 30.
m_speed gets zeroed near surface, glider dives, seconds later it gets called to surface, doing a little nothing dive
m_speed stays 0 through the nothing dive, minutes are eaten
long surfacing 20 min
takes a bit to get off surface u_reqd_depth_at_surface (more on this later) and 30 min goes by --> abort
u_reqd_depth_at_surface - Let's set this to 3.5 m in your autoexec.mi. 7 while very safe and conservative is not great on a few levels with your glider. m_speed gets set to 0 because of it near inflections partially because m_battpos does not move until we are 'diving' not 'at surface'. Battery stays at neutral positions until we clear 7 m so pitch is low. When pitch is low dead reckoning gets its knickers in a bunch. Normally we set this once we know pressure sensor is stable but in your case with the resets it was getting toggled back.
ALL EBD's were present in a listing in St. Thomas before the FW data dump.
So we apparently 'lost' them at some point here:
recovery
data listing all present
NBD mass transfer
MBD mass transfer
some glider power on /off cycles in USVI, perhaps not all clean? Power cut or 2 potentially took place
shipped home
RU download attempt
chkdsk on flash cards, lost files found but garbled together.
POSSIBLE BAD SCIENCE FLASH CARD, REPLACE!
No NLG or EBD present past 10/8 midday GMT. Not sure why NBD and TBD unaffected? Couldn't find anything that happened then. Also some strange folders/files on card when loading in windows.
UPGRADE FW
Yes, this is a know issue. It caused me some grief recently, I only identified and fixed this bug just before Christmas. The anomalies in the pulse compressed echogram originates from a normalization bug in the processing. The normalization shift was not accounted for after the convolution, hence the steps in ~6dB corresponding to the normalization bit shift. We aim to release a new firmware version in January
The good news is that this can be corrected since the complete echogram profile shall be shifted. It should work well to use the noise level in each profile as a measure of which shift that should be applied to that specific profile. I can send you some Matlab code later today that shows how this can be done.
Regards,
Sven
Something to ponder…
Looking at David’s cool echogram animation, I noticed that in many bursts there were vertical lines of lower (blue) or higher (yellow) EA than the background intensity.
I was processing one cast – a ~ 500 m downcast on 23 Sept – for instance, running it through a computation to calculate exact pressure at each range based on tilt and beam angle – and noticed the same jumps, and their effect on trying to evaluate the data, see attached image.
This is one downward profile, x axis is depth, y is echo amplitude, about 5800 pts (8 pings/burst x 4 sec / burst * 49 minutes). The three plots show mean EA at distance of ~ 3, 15, and 27 m range from xducer. I immediately didn’t like the multimodal nature – but now that I see animation, it seems like these are the result of those ‘vertical stripes’ – and that they occur in multiples of ~6 db, and in clusters in time/depth. The variability seems to track, it appears to be an offset.
If anyone understands what might cause this, it would be great to think that we might correct to a standard ‘base level , or worst case remove outliers – can we assume the most populated level is the ‘correct’ one? But don’t want to do that without understanding the cause.
Recovered by OVOCI crew.

Abort for low charge. Upped battery capacity to 500 AH.
Trying an hourglass station keeping |X| routine, more aggressive than square but maybe it pops up more in the middle vs outsides?
28 GB used. Last check 10/15 we had 23 so 5 GB over 18 days = 278 MB /day (this is comparable to before so good)

Another couple stalled aborts.
Got the MLG and DBD for analysis later. I bet increased is from rough seas (unstable pressure at surface) but the root cause still unknown.
Backed off mission and yo file stalled and stuck for, hopefully that reduces incidences for time being.
FLBBCD off past 300 m again
Grabbed MLG from the attitude abort. Just usual error reading heading and right into abort mode, wasn't all the way down seemingly, perhaps close.

Analyzed Silbo last mission, certainly seems to be 15 to 25% energy past the knee for lithium 4S batteries. Drop seems to be around 450 to 500 for lithium 4S based on Silbo and OOI data. Silbo corrected to non-extended.
Using 475 AH total for ru29 before things start happening.

delta is minus 1.5 GB since 9/15 - 6 days or about 252 MB/day. Seems to agree with previous analysis so all good.
Downloaded recent ad2 file and there seems to be full suite of them on the science computer.
Kind of looks like when file hits about 1 GB it appends it _0000,1,2,3? Asked Sven to be sure!
17 36.0 N 64 01.0 W - Doug W. back and forth transects
Turning optics on to full, forgot to do it before crossing bank.
Current file list (.ma, .mi, .dat) now in to-glider. Still need the rest of the ad2cp setup files since dockserver got wiped out.
*Figured out a pretty sure-fire way to crash science_super. Known bug? Will investigate.

Attempted checks on gliders; noticed dockserver unresponsive. Emails showed xymon errors for approx. last 40 min. Contacted Chuck Belmonte who happened to be in the area and stopped in. Flood reported in 109 and 109a; apparently from lab above. Dockserver appears ruined; gliders switched to TWR; scripts changed to tx data. Notified: David Aragon, Chuck Belmonte, John Kerfoot, Josh Kohut, Mike Crowley, Scott Glenn, Travis Miles, Oscar Schofield. Chuck Belmonte had backup dockserver up and running before the end of the evening; RU29 continued to call in there. RU33 switched to TWR; tx'ed data there. Switched RU33 back to Rutgers this morning (20Sep2020); scripts at TWR switched back to callback primary. Normal operations resumed on backup dockserver; will need to address this machine.
!!! put u_min_water_depth 250 !!!
changed u_reqd_depth_at_surface to 2.75 -----> stalled abort
Changed it back to 5 m
loaded new MBDlist which we won't have cache for, may try to generate on simulator
AD2 logging check

3rd field is changing : # of Bytes in Free Clusters : old - new gives more free in old which makes sense = 1669562368 bytes = 1669.562368 GB
FLBBCD off past 300 m (power and interaction avoidance)
MS_ABORT_STALLED @ 06:33. Stalled at 6 m.
Dive angle 28 deg, climb angle 24 deg
Glider ballasted too light. Maybe 50 g (or according to rough numbers would slow the surfacing to about 6 + cm/s which isn't that fast. That would be about 3-4 wing rail weights which would put the glider at around 1024+. Surface densities so far upper 1021's, basically 1022 so could have ballasted to 1024 instead of 1023.5
Undervolts abort seemed to be because of too low undervolt setting. ru26 and ru29 both matched 4S voltage sag during pumping down to 13+ V. Lowered undervolts to 12.5 (ru26 was using 12 for swot) and changed comments in the Software Image.
Changed to 800 m dives early AM just in case but switched back just last surfacing.

Spent day of deployment fighting countercurrents and stepping down depths; 60 m, 120 m, 250 m, 500 m, 750 m, 975 m. Increased no comms accordingly; currently at 4 hr interval. Initially had issues making progress until dives were deeper. Ping pong waypoints near deployment location until comfort level w/ ad2cp & power draw has plateaued.
