My interests revolve around the geochemistry of biogenic carbonates. Corals, for example, serve as paleoceanographic archives; isotopic composition and ratios trace elements to calcium in their skeleton can be used to reconstruct the past ocean environment. The skeletal chemistry, however, is also affected by biological factors and complicates the interpretation of the measurements. I am interested in understanding these geochemical signatures, their use as paleoproxies, and how they are affected by environmental and biological factors. Additionally, I am also interested in using geochemical techniques to elucidate mechanisms of biocalcification to both explain skeletal composition to refine proxies and better understand how biocalcifiers will respond to ocean acidification.
Originally from NYC, I took slight detour in my academic career after high school and joined the Navy. Fortuitously, I became a Sonar Technician and was stationed aboard the USS Greeneville SSN 772 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Hooyah! My sonar training exposed me to oceanography which led me to major in environmental science and intern at NOAA and JISAO. After graduation, I worked as a research tech at CCNY studying various topics in atmospheric science.
