Fish Physiology

saba 2

Fisheries are a major marine resource, and a critical component of the United States economy. Fish have optimal habitats that can be strongly related to temperature. Thus, as waters become warmer, the distribution of certain fish species is changing. There is increasing importance to include habitat information into fisheries stock assessment models, as stock dynamics and observations of stock abundance are impacted by habitat. We conduct laboratory studies to determine the impact of temperature on fish physiology and critical limits. We have projects working with NOAA NMFS to improve habitat metrics based on laboratory studies of commercially important fish species. This information will ultimately be used to guide existing and future management decisions.
