Advanced study of estuarine circulation and dynamics will further my goals of helping the City of Philadelphia protect its drinking water intakes from contaminant threats and impacts on critical infrastructure from climate change and storm surge. The research will directly support local planning efforts that can reduce the environmental impact of the City and improve the water quality of the Delaware River and estuary.
My career at Philadelphia Water as an Environmental Engineer began with a focus on protecting the city’s drinking water intakes through a combination of observational tributary water quality studies, partnership building among upstream water stakeholders, and management of an award winning watershed-wide pollution warning system. Within this framework, my curiosity in the physics of contaminant transport grew. This interest resulted in a shift in focus to modeling transport in the tidal river and estuary and a Master’s Thesis research project that evaluated the city’s drinking water vulnerabilities. This knowledge was then transitioned into the developing Green City, Clean Waters program of Philadelphia, which aims to greatly reduce stormwater impacts on the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. As part of that program, my colleagues and I helped build one of the most highly resolved 3D models of the urban Delaware River with a realistic approach to hydrology, nutrient, and pathogen indicator inputs.
