Rutgers Professor Publishes Fourth Edition of Bestselling Marine Science Book

Mike Kennish Grass Book

Mike Kennish, professor emeritus in the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences, is the author of the newly published fourth edition of the marine science book, Practical Handbook of Marine Science.

The volume adds a new, in-depth section devoted to “Climate Change and Climate Change Effects” and includes highly revised sections on Estuaries, Beaches, Barrier Islands, Shellfish, Macroalgae, Food Chains, Food Webs, Trophic Dynamics, System Productivity, Physical-Chemical-Biological Alteration and Coastal Resource Management. It also provides comprehensive coverage of anthropogenic impacts on estuarine and marine ecosystems from local, regional, and global perspectives.

Kennish, a world-class estuarine scientist, published the first edition of this best-selling handbook in 1989 when he was a visiting professor at Rutgers.

This new, comprehensive volume, published by CRC Press, Taylor and Francis (London, New York, Boca Raton) on July 29, continues its tradition as a state-of-the-art reference that updates the field of marine science to meet the interdisciplinary research needs of physical oceanographers, marine biologists, marine chemists and marine geologists.

Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences has played a vital role in the development of Practical Handbook of Marine Science over the past 30 years, explained Kennish.

“The departments of Marine and Coastal Sciences, Earth and Planetary Sciences, and Environmental Sciences are the hub of extensive, state-of-the-art work in coastal, estuarine, and marine sciences that has formed the foundation for the various editions of this book.”

These departments have played central roles in emerging areas of coastal, estuarine, and marine sciences, such as various components of climate change, sea-level rise, human-induced coastal modification, pollution, fisheries, marine stratigraphy, ocean robotics, and deep-sea ecology and biotechnology.
