C. Grant Law • Vertical structure of the water column

This work has been presented in poster form by several people who have spent time with our group.

This poster was presented at the 2005 ASLO conference in Salt Lake City.

This is an example of a raw echogram typical of those collected from the Nauvoo in 2004. Raw echogram
In this figure I have removed the spikes (visible in the raw plot as vertical lines) and plotted the echogram along the path the Nauvoo traversed on this sampling run.  The high scattering levels visible at the surface in the raw echogram are shown here to coincide with times in which the boat had stopped to deploy the tucker-trawl.  These high surface scattering levels, seen whenever we stopped moving, were likely caused by small bubbles generated by the ship. This video (click on the figure at right to begin the video) is an animated perceived depth image (PDI) of ADCP data gathered in the Porcupine Seabight (provided by Kirsty Kemp).  To experience the 3D effect, first position your eyes about 30 cm from the screen, then slowly cross your eyes until the two plots merge.  Use the slider to see how the current vectors change over time. 3D rendering of ADCP data
