The Log Viewer

The Log Viewer is a TeraScan application for displaying the contents of log files that store messages about data-reception and data-processing events.  This information can be useful for diagnosing and troubleshooting the TeraScan system.

What the Log Viewer Displays

The Log Viewer has two tabs - Schedlog and PGS.  These tabs display the contents of the respective files schedlog.html and pgslog.html, which are located in the $PASSDIR directory. These files contain attachments to logfiles located in the $PASSDIR/logfiles directory.  The attachments can also be opened and viewed from within the Log Viewer.

schedlog is a running list of messages continually generated on an acquisition system, about the status of data scheduling, antenna tracking, data capture, and autoarchiving.  The attachment files contain messages and may contain additional links to HTML log files that pertain to data capture and any data processing linked to data capture.

As new messages are appended to the schedlog file being displayed in the Log Viewer, older messages will scroll out of view at the top of the list in the Log Viewer.  To stop automatic scrolling and keep a message visible in the window, click on the message to select it.  To again view new messages being added to the bottom of the Log Viewer, you would then have to use the vertical scroll bar located on the right side of the Log Viewer window.

To quickly find messages from a previous day, enter the day's date into the date field at the top of the Log Viewer or use the arrowheads next to the date field.

Viewing Attachments

Some messages have attachments that provide further information on an event.  Double-click on a message with an attachment in order to view the attachment.  Note: You may need to widen the Log Viewer window and/or use the scroll bar at the bottom of the window to see which messages have an attachment.

Note: Attached files will eventually be scrubbed to save disk space.  However, the links to these orphan files will still remain.  (Scrubbing rules are set in $PASSDIR/config/diskhogs.config.)

Emergency, Alert, Critical and Error messages will be highlighted in red.  Warning messages will be highlighted in yellow.

To get a list of definitions for the different severity levels, run man syslog at the command line.

Note: To close an attachment, select File -> Close.  This will close the viewer and return to the Log Viewer window. (File -> Exit will exit from the Log Viewer.)

Filtering

Use the Filter Methods controls to reduce the number of messages shown in the Log Viewer.  The Log Viewer can filter by date, keyword, or both.

To filter by date, enter a date in the date field using this format: yyyy/mm/dd.  You can also use the arrow keys to scroll through dates by day.  The Log Viewer will automatically jump to the log file that is closest to the date in the date field.

To filter by keyword, enter a keyword or several in the text field to the left of the Apply button.  To search down (forward in time) through the log files for the next instance of the expression you entered, click Next.  To search up through the files, click Prev.  To filter the log files and selectively display all files that contain the expression in the keyword field, click Apply.  The Log Viewer will display all instances of the keyword while still applying the severity rule.
