Displaying Raw Data "Images" with Satellite TV

Satellite TV (STV) operates in two modes: TV Guide and Watch.

  • In TV Guide mode, Satellite TV displays information about telemetry currently being received and a Reception Schedule for the next scheduled acquisition for each active telemetry.

The current receiver location and coverage area are displayed on a map.  If you select a telemetry from the Live or Reception Schedule list, the corresponding satellite orbit and position will also be displayed on the map and will be updated at regular intervals.  The default map center is the current receiver location.  You can click on the map to reset the map center.

  • In Watch mode, Satellite TV displays a live pass as it is being received, or a previously received pass that you select from the File --> View Online Pass list.

To display raw data as it is being received:

  1. To view data as it is being received, select from the list in the Live schedule of the TV Guide tab and click on the Watch tab.  Ascending passes will be drawn from the bottom of the screen up and descending passes will be drawn from the top of the screen down, so that North is always at the top of the screen.

Note:  STV will monitor all the telemetry chains configured in the $PASSDIR/system.config file.  To monitor live data for a specific telemetry chain only, select the telemetry chain from the View menu (All Telemetry Chains is selected by default).

  2. To view one sensor channel or variable of a pass, two channels of a pass displayed side by side, or three channels in a multi-channel color view (red, blue, and green channels), select Single, Dual, or Color, respectively, and then select the variable/channel to view.

  3. Drag a rectangle in the image to enlarge an area of the displayed pass.  To display the entire pass again, click on the Zoom Reset button.  Zoom mode is always on.

  4. Coastline/geopolitcal borders and lines of latitude/longitude are overlayed on the pass being viewed. Click on the Toggle Overlays button to toggle the overlays off/on.

As you move the mouse cursor over the image, the latitude/longitude coordinates are displayed in the status area at the bottom of the window.

  5. Click on the Enhance button to apply histogram equalization to the displayed area of the pass.  (Click on the button again when you want to turn off the enhancement.)

  6. To interrupt the live signal and keep what is on the screen from being overwritten by the next pass as it is being received, click on the Pause button to freeze the display. (Click on the button again when you want to unfreeze the display.)

Note:  STV will not check for new live passes until reception of the current pass is complete.

To display data from the pass disk:

  1. From the STV File menu select View Online Pass. The View Pass dialog box will appear.

  2. Select a pass from the list in the View Pass dialog box.  Pass coverage is displayed graphically in the window above the list.

Click on View to load the pass in the Watch window.  The amount of time it takes to display the pass will depend on the image size.

  3. Use the STV controls to modify the display as described in steps 3 through 6 above .

To monitor an individual telemetry:

Start STV and select a telemetry chain from the View menu.

OR

Start STV from the command line with a telemetry name as follows:

% stv <telemetry>

For example, stv hrpt would launch a Satellite TV "tuned" to incoming HRPT images.

OR

Start STV from the command line with a telemetry chain number as follows:

% stv <chain number>

For example, stv 1 would launch a Satellite TV that monitors telemetry chain 1.
