Yeah, I've noticed this on various linux boxes. I believe that it is an issue with java, as it seems to arise when one starts matlab with the -nojvm option. You can get around this by either going without the -nojvm option (try the -nodesktop option instead), or by paring down the number of choosable variables with the varlist option to rslice.
