Support IMCS > Funding Priorities

Gifts to the general IMCS/Rutgers Annual Fund and specified Leadership Gifts support IMCS funding priorities:

  • Supporting Students
    • IMCS offers both an undergraduate major and minor in marine sciences that includes hands-on research. Many students simply cannot pay the full tuition, and even for those whose families can, tuition covers only part of the full cost of educating and training each student. Scholarship funds at IMCS can open the door for undergraduates who would otherwise be unable to pursue marine science.
    • Graduate students are the next generation of promising teachers and researchers. Their presence is also critical to the on-going work of the faculty and the ability of IMCS to recruit and retain additional faculty. Most graduate students do not have personal funds to finance graduate work, and are attracted to institutions where they receive fellowship support and can work closely with leading scientists. Post-docs need help, too.
  • Supporting Faculty
    • Competition for the world’s best scientists is fierce. A gift to provide a named chair recognizes a dedicated and skillful faculty member and provides incentive for continued service.
  • Supporting Projects and Programs
    • State-of-the-art facilities are necessary for research and teaching. In particular, IMCS urgently needs facilities for its Ocean Science Education Center and the Coastal Research Center. Included in the centers are laboratories and lecture halls, seminar and conference rooms offering exciting opportunities for a lasting tribute.
    • Jacques Cousteau Education Center Outreach Programs provide New Jersey and area K-12 teachers and students, and municipal and state coastal decision-makers with the training and tools they need. Gifts will ensure the continued outreach needed to manage the protection and development of our coastal resources.
    • Ongoing Research Projects -While many of the research projects receive government funding, grants frequently cover only the basic components of the research.
