===DATA INFORMATION ===

Meta Data

  • YYMMDD
    Year, month, date,
  • HHMM
    Hour,minute. Greenwich Time.

    averaged data:

For the purpose of illustration, a record with "HHMM"="1200" is an average over the following raw records:

average type centered average forward average
    15 minute 1153 to 1207 1200 to 1214
    30 minute 1146 to 1215 1200 to 1229
    1 hour 1131 to 1230 1200 to 1259
    3 hour 1031 to 1330 1200 to 1459
    6 hour 0901 to 1500 1200 to 1759

    raw data
data is recorded from "0001" to "2359". There is no record for "2400"
  • Vel_E
Velocity, Eastly (wind blowing FROM the East is positive) Arithmetic mean.
  • Vel_N
Velocity, Northly ( wind blowing FROM the North is positive). Arithmetic mean.
  • Spd1
Vector average of the intensity of the wind. It is derived from the mean U and V components.
  • Spd2
Intensity of the wind. Geometric mean of the raw wind speed to conserve kinetic energy. In raw (1 minute) data, Spd1 always equals to Spd2.
  • Dir
Direction the wind is blowing FROM. The mean wind direction is derived from the mean U and V components. When the wind blows directly FROM North :0, FROM East:90 ... etc. .

Note: The above definition of wind vectors and direction are inherited from the sensors' setup and are held true in all the data we provide here. However, in the plots we provide through RODAN a more common definition is followed: in the time series plots of wind components, a positive number means the wind blows TO the east or TO the north. In the wind-vector plot, the vector points to the directionn the wind blows To.

  • BarPres
    Barometer pressure. Arithmetic mean.
  • RelHum
    Relative Humidity. Arithmetic mean.
  • UnadjTEMP
    Unadjusted temperature measurement. Arithmetic mean.
  • TEMP
    Temperature. Arithmetic mean.
  • Sol Rad
Solar Radiation. Minus numbers are negligible errors. Arithmetic mean.
  • N/A
sensors are not installed at this time.

Raw Data Collection Information

Until December 9, 1995 the only instrument mounted on the

meteorological tower was the wind sensor.

12/9/95 barometric pressure, air temperature and relative

humidity sensors were installed.

12/31/95 IMET stopped running.

1/25/96 BP, AT and Rel. Hum. working. Wind removed from

tower for repair.

2/15/96 Wind Sensor and Short Wave Radiation (SWR) installed

on tower

2/21/96 have been seeing bad temperature data on occassion.

5300 degrees. later determined that this was because the clock

speed on the computer being used was too fast. Once it was

slowed down the bad temp data disappeared.

4/29/96 BP and AT went down 4/28/96. Remaining instruments went

down today.

5/2/96 AT and Hum. still not working - lost their calibration

constants.

5/20/96 AT back on tower and running

5/30/96 Hum reinstalled on tower and running.

The IMET system was hit by lightning on June 17, 1996.

This knocked out the network connection which in turn

shut down the PC collecting the IMET data. On June 21,

1996 the network commands were cut out of the PC startup

file. IMET came back on line but updates to the file

were not made every minute. The changes in data that are

seen are real. The repeated lines of data are bad data.

On July 5, 1996 the 485 communications board in PC was

found to be damaged. The board was replaced and continuous

good data was being collected. On July 9, 1996 there was

another lightning hit. This time the IMET PC was damaged.

The PC was replaced on July 12, 1996.

12/25/97 Imet system went down. Restarted 1/6/97.

1/7/97 power at RUMFS off so IMET down for day.

4/22-4/25/97 need to edit time/date stamp because of 12 hour time

shift when computer clock was reset. Date/time is 12 hours ahead of where

it really is.

7/23/97 network connetion died at 0125z. Restarted 1426z.

8/11/97 network connection lost at 1845z. Restarted ~2100z.

8/13/97 lightning hit IMET knocked out.

8/14/97 instruments removed from tower. Wind repaired and reinstalled.

8/19/97 SWR, RH, BP and AT reinstalled on tower

9/5/97 network died at 1903z. Restarted 9/8/97.

9/24/97 IMET down temporarily to switch to auxillary data cable.

10/2/97 IMET down temporarily to switch back to main data cable.

12/8/97 BP, AT and RH down.

12/9/97 lightning protection installed.

12/12/97 instruments reinstalled and connected to lightning protection.

1/18/99 IMET offline due to storm 2015z to 1/19/99 1403z.

3/1/99 IMET sensors removed from the tower for calibration at WHOI (Dr. Rich ard Payne)

3/10/99 Wind and Air Temperature sensors reinstalled on IMET tower

3/17/99 Barometric Pressure and Short Wave Radiation sensors reinstalled on I MET tower

3/26/99 IMET system down from 1650 GMT to 3/29/99 1356 GMT, power glitch at R UMFS

3/31/99 Relative Humidity sensor reinstalled on IMET tower with calibrated te mperature

11/5/99 19M level Wind Sensor installed on IMET tower

11/29/99 10M level Wind Sensor began giving erroneous direction data (differi ng

from 19M level by greater than 20-25 degrees, sensor removed from tower for r epair

12/2/99 Encoder in 10 meter wind sensor failed. The failure mechanism may ha ve begun prior to the installation of the wind sensor at the 19 meter level of t he tower.

2/23/00 10M level Wind Sensor reinstalled on the tower. Wind sensor directio n from the 19 meter level wind sensor was found to be approximately 50 degrees l ess than it should have been and was adjusted accordingly. The 19M level wind s ensor has been off by the 50 degrees from the time it was installed on the tower until today at 1837GMT. Phoebe is correcting the 50 degree difference in the d ata.

4/7/00 19M level Wind Sensor alignment checked and found to be 6 degrees less than it should have been. Alignment was done using Brigantine water tower and Fish Factory water tower. Alignment begun at 1346z, end @1447z.

3/3/01 IMET offline 3/3/01 at 1330z to 3/5/01 at 1632z due to computer glit ch

4/15/01 19M level wind speed reading zero @ 2242z. 19M level wind direction

appears to be okay.

5/14/01 19M wind sensor removed from tower for repair bad 3160 chip
