Rocky Seahores: In New Jersey, we have man-made rocky seashores. Large rocks are placed near inlets, called jetties, to project the coastline. Along, many NJ beaches there are rocks placed perpendicular the coast called groins. Many think these groins protect the coast from erosion. Twice a day the tides wash in and out over the groins providing a home to many intertidal plants and animals.

Sandy Beaches: New Jersey has 120 miles of coast line. NJ beaches are dynamic places. The physical force of the wind and waves move sand landward and seaward, shaping and forming the beach.

Wetlands: Estuaries are semi enclosed bodies of water where the river meets the sea. Estuaries provide clean water, help protect coastal areas from floading, and serve as natural buffers. The Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve consists of approximately 110,000 acres of public land around the Mullica River-Great Bay region.
