The National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERR) is using the System Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) and national network of research scientists and educators, to play an important role in linking ocean observatory data streams to key users including coastal managers, K-12 teachers, and their students.

Even before there were modern day oceanographers, humans have been intrigued by the sea. It's in our nature to want to explain the how and why of our world. Ocean observing systems are providing scientists with the ability to collect environmental data and monitor the conditions of our coastal oceans dynamically and continuously in real time.
