Highlights
- Runoff of large amounts of nitrogen from lawns into storm drains
continues to threaten the health of our coastal waterways in Southern
New Jersey. In an effort to raise public awareness of this problem,
the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve has joined
with Long Beach, Barnegat and Little Egg Harbor townships for
an "Adopt a Storm Drain" program. To read more, click
on the Atlantic City Press article "The
ubiquitous storm drain/Pay attention," December 5, 2007.

Student News
- Grant Law has accepted a post-doctoral position at Oregon Graduate
Institute's Science Technology Center for Coastal Margin Observation
& Prediction in beautiful Portland, Oregon. Grant's primary
project will be to explore the potential effects of climate change
on juvenile salmon
Let's Welcome
- Lisa Ojanen: "I’m very pleased to join the COOL group.
Most recently I held a GIS Analyst position with the Meadowlands
Environmental Research Institute here in New Jersey. Past appointments
include terrestrial remote sensing research in the University
of Maryland Dept. of Geography and in Goddard Space Flight Center's
Biospheric Science group; and ocean remote sensing and GIS at
the NOAA NCCOS Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment in
Silver Spring, Maryland. My M.S. was awarded by the University
of Florida's Dept. of Civil and Coastal Engineering; where I specialized
in remote sensing and geospatial mapping. My personal research
interests include investigating a potential corollary between
suspected Godzilla sightings and SST anomalies in the Sea of Japan,
and my favorite person is my dog." (Room 116, ext. 505)
- Igor Heifetz has joined IMCS as a Web Developer for Coastal
Ocean Observation Lab. Igor brings with him a lot of experience
from working as Senior Web/Graphic Designer for DeMarco Communication
Group in Fort Lee, NJ
and as IT specialist for Citigroup in New York, NY. Igor holds
a Bachelor degree in Radio Electronic and graduated from School
of Contemporary Art in Novgorod, Russia. Computers and graphics
are his passion and he is excited to be paid doing what he loves.
