- Discover magazine has named The Census of Marine Life
one of the 6 most important current experiments. Read the brief
article with quotes from Fred Grassle in this attachment
adapted from the December issue.
Enjoy a Census video at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXXzvGJCVAc
- Greg DeBrosse and Eric Powell were interviewed by Maryann Spoto
of the Star Ledger. Research by Rutgers scientists played important
role in bringing back oysters to New Jersey. Click here
to read more.
- Jim Ammerman presented the talk "The Sea You Can't See:
Microbes in the Ocean" at the Liberty Science Center Saturday
Nov. 17. This is the third in a series of lectures that are a
partnership between Rutgers and the Science Center, funded by
the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. The talk series also has two
hour professional development workshops that coordinate with the
talks presented to distribute lesson plans and materials that
will help bring the ocean back to the K-12 classroom. Carrie Fraser
and Kate Jordan assisted with the workshop. Janice McDonnell runs
the program with assistance from Sage Lichtenwalner.
- Jennifer Francis was invited to give a presentation to the New
Jersey State Society on The Hill in Washington, DC, November 1st.
The talk was entitled "The Winds of Climate Change: Are We
Sailing off the Chart?"
- Jennifer Francis gave an invited presentation on global climate
change to the Monmouth Conservation Foundation at their annual
meeting.
- Peter Rona was an invited speaker at meetings of the Prince
William Sound Regional Citizens' Advisory Council (RCAC) in Anchorage,
Alaska on November 30th. RCAC is a collaborative public-industrial
organization that was launched after the Exxon Valdez oil spill
in Prince William Sound in 1989 to promote environmentally safe
oil pipeline and tanker operations in that region. Peter spoke
about the significance of discoveries of gas hydrates on continental
margins and hydrothermal systems on ocean ridges in terms of the
environment and resources and showed the Rutgers film, Volcanoes
of the Deep Sea.
- Research by Ximing Guo, David Bushek and others on the proposed
introduction of the Asian oyster Crassostrea ariakensis
was featured in a set of Research summary fact sheets produced
by NOAA and released at the recent ERF conference. Click to view,
fact
sheet A and fact
sheet B. Ximing and Dave were invited speakers at the conference
in a related session.
- The Asbury Park Press reported on a study by Richard Lathrop
and Scott Haag of development in the Barnegat watershed, and noted
the work of Mike Kennish. Click here
to read more from the article by Kirk Moore.
- Alan Robock gave an invited talk, "Climatic Consequences
of Nuclear Conflicts A Nuclear Winter is Still a Threat"
to the Geological Society of Washington, Cosmos Club, Washington,
DC, October 24, 2007.
- Lily Young was a guest speaker at a class on Ecotoxicology of
the Hudson River, NYU. Bioremediation, Fact or Fiction, 4 lectures,
October 30, 2007
- Alan Robock produced a PowerPoint available on the web for use
in teaching: Climatic Consequences of Regional Nuclear Conflict
PowerPoint (31 MB - for teaching) (October 4, 2007) http://climate.envsci.rutgers.edu/robock/NuclearWinterForDistribution4.ppt
- Alan Robock appeared for one-hour interview about climate change
on The Paradise Parking Lot radio show on the Progressive Radio
Network (audience of about 100,000), October 31, 2007.
Meetings Attended
- Jim Ammerman presented a poster entitled: "Applications
of the ocean biogeographic information system (OBIS) to HAB data,"
at the Fourth Symposium on Harmful Algae in the U.S. at the MBL
at Woods Hole, MA, Oct. 28-Nov. 1.
- Lily Young made a presentation, "Arsenic in Groundwater:
is Microbiology the Cause or Consequence?" at the Biotechnology
Center for Agriculture and the Environment, 20th Anniversary Symposium,
October 12, 2007.
- The Estuarine Research Federation's 19th Biennial International
Conference, "Science and Management: Observations, Syntheses,
Solutions" was held in Providence, Rhode Island Nov. 4-8,
2007. The conference was well attended by IMCS faculty, researchers,
and member. Here is a list of presentations, click here
