2003
Highlights
- Jennifer Francis has been invited to serve a 3-year term on
the National Science Foundation's Science Steering Committee for
the Arctic System Science (ARCSS) program.
- Jennifer Francis has been invited to serve as a science advisor
to the education and outreach component of NSF's new research
aircraft called HIAPER (High-performance Instrumented Airborne
Platform for Environmental Research).

- Louis Bowers is our resident Meteorologist. You can see
him broadcast the weather each Thursday on Rutgers' Channel
6. The weather forecast is aired every 15 minutes. Thus,
if you want to stop by the Remote Sensing Lab (Rm. 109),
you can see Louis tell us what the weather will be like
for the day.

- The glider group deployed RU03 at the Tuckerton Field Station,
where it will run a continuous back and forth mission, that was
in the beginning of November. While RU02 is running its mission
at Tuckerton, part of the glider group then went down to Sarasota,
Florida to deploy three other gliders (RU01, RU02, and RU04).
All three gliders are being monitored and controlled by the glider
control center at the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences
building, while swimming to their designated lat/lon coordinates.
A red tide patch was found, and the gliders are flying into the
box area to sample, while Mark Moline from CalPoly will be deploying
his remus for further sampling of the red tide patch. All current
information for the Florida deployed gliders can be viewed at
http://marine.rutgers.edu/cool/glider/webpage/glidersiteFL_EcoHAB.htm,
and all the current information for the New Jersey deployed glider
can be viewed at http://marine.rutgers.edu/cool/glider/webpage/glidersiteNJ_Tuckerton.htm.
There are also capture files of the real-time surface dialogs
from the gliders.
- This past October, Rutgers and SeaSpace Corporation installed
a X-Band satellite system. X-band is the latest technology in
satellite data transmission. It offers a faster data transmission
rate than RU-COOL's current SeaSpace L-Band satellite dish. This
faster rate is necessary for the larger volume of data generated
by the sensors on today's earth monitoring satellites. For details
about the X-Band system and to see pictures of the actual installation,
please go to http://www.thecoolroom.org/news/031011_xband.htm.
- Peter Rona presented a lecture on the science behind the IMAX
film, "Volcanoes of the Deep Sea," to an audience of
students and adults at the Montclair Adult School on November
10th.
- On September 24, Prof. Robock made a presentation to Cook students
at a Peace Corps recruiting meeting. He described his experiences
and encouraged students to consider volunteering for the Peace
Corps when they graduate.
