Highlights
- A new book was just published by CRC Press (Boca Raton, Florida)
called Biology of Marine Birds, edited by B.A. Schreiber and J.
Burger.
Meetings Attended
- Fred Grassle presented a marine perspective at the Summit for
all Species convened by Ed Wilson at Harvard.
- Costantino Vetriani attended the second international symposium
on deep-sea hydrothermal vent biology, held in Brest, France,
on October 8-12, 2001. He presented a paper (co-authored with
A. Reed, M. Speck and R. Lutz) on microbial communities associated
with deep-sea hydrothermal vents along the East Pacific Rise ridge
(9 50'N).
- Peter Rona presented an invited lecture to the Princeton Chapter
of the American Chemical Society on October 16th addressing the
changing vision of non-living and living resources of the ocean.
A story highlighting the lecture appeared in the October 10th
issue of the "US 1" newspaper which attracted a broad
cross-section of attendees.

- On 10/2, The Philadelphia Inquirer featured Dr. Fred Grassle
and Dr. Peter Rona in "NJ scientists make discovery in Atlantic:
Methane found 7,000 feet down could explain the continental shelf's
increasing instability"

- $45,000 was awarded by Public Service Electric and Gas Company
to the Marine Aquaculture Demonstration Facility.
- $2,000,000 was awarded to Gary Taghon from NSF for "Biocomplexity:
The Roles of Resources, Competition, and Predation in Microbial
Degradation."
- $78,581 was awarded to Paul Falkowski and Michael Bender from
NASA for "Using Remote Sensing and Ocean Oxygen Measurements
to Constrain Carbon Fluxes in the Southern Ocean."
- $24,550 was awarded to Lee Kerkhof and Sybil Seitzinger for
"Microbial Ecology of Denitrifying Bacteria" from the
Department of Energy
- $540,000 was awarded to Mike DeLuca and Janice McDonnell from
NOAA for JCNERR.
- $152,500 was awarded to Dale Haidvogel and Hernan Arango for
"Modular Ocean Data Assimilation" by the National Science
Foundation.
