On June 25, 2007 WNBC aired "Undersea
Dangers for Barnegat Bay" by Brian Thompson, a piece
on Mike Kennish's work on Barnegat Bay. According to Brian
Thompson, new research by RU shows that nitrogen entering
the bay from land runoff, the atmosphere, and groundwater
is polluting bay waters. The nitrogen is stimulating excessive
growth of algae that is detrimental to vital seagrass habitat.
The explosive growth of the algae blocks out sunlight to the
seagrass, which is essential habitat for bay scallops, clams,
and some finfish species. Click on link to view video:

Student News
| This summer the IMCS is hosting nine undergraduate
interns in faculty labs in New Brunswick, and at the RUMFS
and HSRL in Tuckerton and Bivalve respectively. The interns'
stipends are funded from a variety of sources including IMCS,
NSF/REU supplements awarded to individual faculty, and the
Aresty Research Center. The students, their home institutions,
and their faculty mentors are listed below. Students will
carry out their own research for ten weeks during the summer
and present their results at a poster session in early August. |
