  • Janice McDonnell, Director of the Education & Outreach team at IMCS, was nominated as the Chair-Elect of the Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence or COSEE council. The council is charged by NSF to develop strategies and products that (1) promote ocean science literacy for K-12 students and the general public, and 2) forge new and effective partnerships between scientists and educators to improve ocean science learning. See www.cosee.net or www.macosee.net to learn more about the NSF funded COSEE program.

Researchers at IMCS were featured in two articles by Kitta MacPherson of the Star Ledger. To read the article "Technology opens wider 'window on the ocean' " click on the link: StarLedger52906.pdf

  • Jennifer Bosch, a member of the RU COOL lab, was recently interviewed by Kathy Orr, chief meteorologist at CBS-3, at the Ocean City boardwalk. Kathy will be using satellite sea surface temperature images produced by Jen in her summer beach and shore reports to give beach goers a better idea of ocean conditions. • Congratulations to Janice McDonnell who has been selected to receive the prestigious 2006 James Centorino Award from the National Marine Educators Association! This very prestigious annual award recognizes distinguished performance in marine education for a non-classroom educator.
  • On Sunday, May 12th, Joanna Burger was the graduation speaker at the University of Alaska--Fairbanks where she received an honorary doctorate.

DNA extraction procedures and solutions provide added value for the SEM user imaging insect exoskeletal morphology by cleaning off waxes from the exoskeleton. Image captured by Catherine Duckett, Rutgers University Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences as part of a project to determine feasibility of obtaining useful DNA and morphologic data from the same small insect samples. Image width is approximately 200 μm and was captured on an FEI XL-30 scanning electron microscope at the Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History.
