June 26, 1998 (11:40 GMT) - This Satellite image of Georges is from band 4 of the AVHRR satellite, which shows the thermal signal radiating from the surface of the Earth. The dark blue areas are warm and clear while the dark red areas show the coldest temperatures. This cold signal occurs only over the highest clouds, which are frozen ice crystals at the top.
Hurricanes Edouard and Fran - This image is an AVHRR false-color visible image from September 1, 1996. The red areas are areas of high cloud tops and blue areas are cloud free.
AVHRR satellite image (visible) of the fires on Long Island on August 24, 1995. The smoke plume follows the southward direction of the winds. The fires eventually burned 6000 acres of forest and the smoke was visble from 240 miles away.
AVHRR (channel 1, Red band visible) image of a smoke plume rising from the April 5, 1995 forest fire in the New Jersey Pinelands. The fire destroyed at least 20,000 acres of wooded area. Interestingly, no houses were reported burned.
