Research Interests:
My research focuses on the dynamics of the coastal ocean. I am currently
involved in the development of a coastal network of surface wave radars
to continuously sample movement of the ocean surface. This network
consists of multiple systems sampling with grid resolutions of 1.5
km near-shore (within 40 km) to 6 km further offshore (out to 170
km). More recently a bistatic component has been added to optimize
the entire network. In bistatic mode the transmitter is seperated
from the reciever using either offshore moorings or other coastal
sites. This new geometry provides additional measures of the surface
current field that are used to reduce measurement error and extend
the data coverage. Longterm surface current measurements of this multi-static
HF radar network can be broken down into several components including
stationary and nonstationary flows. By looking at each component seperately,
I can concentrate on the contribution of each individual component
to the surface dynamics. With the longer time series, my studies focus
on many time scales ranging from individual events, like storms and
upwelling, up to seasonal climatologies.
