Eye of the Blizzard of 2003

The President's Day Blizzard of 2003 was a prolific snow producer throughout the region, dumping 1'-2' of snow across New Jersey. 20.9" of snow fell at the IMCS over a 3 day period, making this the 2nd largest snowfall in New Brunswick history, second only to the Blizzard of 1996 (22.6"). Blizzard conditions gripped the Garden State for most of the 17th, and some coastal flooding was experienced along the coast.

RU COOL Visible Satellite Imagery picked up this intense nor'easter as it moved up along the East Coast. The satellite image shows the development of an 'eye-like' feature, common in hurricanes, off the coast of Virginia. Only a few of the most intense winter storms develop an "eye", as it is caused by a strong pressure gradient, and a large temperature difference between the ocean and atmosphere.
