This introductory course provides students with an overview of the contributions to marine science of the disciplines of physical oceanography, geology, chemistry, and biology.

The course meets three times a week. It has no laboratory, but two sessions are devoted to laboratory demonstrations in the Marine and Coastal Sciences building. Students are asked to write a term paper on a marine science topic of their own choosing. Considerable emphasis is placed on teaching students to access -and feel comfortable reading- marine science literature.
