Description: The primary emphasis of the course is on the physiological ecology of the phytoplankton emphasizing how physical/chemical factors regulate phytoplankton productivity. A second goal is to provide background on new technologies being developed to study phytoplankton in nature. Readings from primary literature and a reference list for each topic will be provided to act as a springboard for your own research.

Examinations: The course grade will be based upon a midterm (20%), a final exam (20%), and a term paper (60%). An NSF proposal (10 pages, project description, see attached document), chosen by the student, will emphasize any topic pertinent to phytoplankton biology/ecology.
