This image is a combination of a CTD cross section and satellite image. The CTD (conductivity temperature depth sensor) cross sections are provided by groups here at the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences. They are performed once a month during the fall, winter, and spring and once a week during the summer, weather permitting. The cruise consists of a computer data logger, two technical assistants to aid the drop/lift of the CTD, and, of course, the boat captain. Occasionally additional biological, chemical, or sediment research is also done.
The images in the top, left corner of each picture are the temperature cross sections from station A1 to A7. The location of these stations can be seen on the satellite images as large X's. The cross sections are of varying lengths due to limited time or bad weather.
