Use the density cross-section shown in Figure 7.3 of the text book to calculate the speed of the Gulf Stream near the surface off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Assume that the sea-surface slope is in the opposite direction and 300 times smaller than the slope of the 1027 kg/m^3 isopycnal. Hint: The Gulf Stream is located in the region where the slope of the isopycnals is steepest.
