The temperature corss-sections shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2 illustrate a coastal upwelling event off the coast of New Jersey. For the following questions assume a control area extending 4 km offshore from the coast and 1 km along-shore.
- (a) if the along-shore wind stress is 0.45 kg/(m s^2) calculate the resulting cross-shore Ekman transport in the surface frictional layer.
- (b) assuming a vertical eddy viscosity (Az) of 0.08 kg/(m s) calculate the depth of the layer of frictional influence (Ekman layer depth).
- (c) what is the vertical velocity at the bottom of the Ekman layer?
